Advocate Sherman Hospital offers stroke class in Huntley

Advocate Sherman Hospital will host an informational talk about preventing a first stroke with Donna Kruse, a registered nurse and stroke coordinator at Advocate Sherman Hospital.

The talk will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the Advocate Sherman Outpatient Center, 12155 Regency Parkway, Huntley.

She will discuss important stroke risk factors, including hypertension, myocardial infarction, atrial fibrillation, diabetes, blood lipids, sleep apnea and its associated risks involved with cardiovascular complications and symptomatic carotid artery stenosis. Different lifestyle factors affect strokes too, like cigarette smoking, alcohol use, physical activity and diet.

"We constantly want to move one's health care towards prevention," Kruse said. "If we can educate the community on stroke risk factors as well as what to do when one has stroke symptoms, we have a better chance of helping individuals implement healthy lifestyle changes and saving their lives."
