Poe families celebrate cultural diversity

Students and families from Poe Elementary School gathered on May 4 to share their culture with their classmates, friends, and the school community. This was the 6th annual Poe Cultural Showcase.

The evening was filled with events and activities for families to learn about the rich diversity within their community. Families volunteered at booths where they displayed objects of significance from their background, shared traditional foods, and helped attendees make crafts from their country of origin.

"Our students learn about each other's cultural background every day, but we always look forward to sharing this special celebration of our diversity with our extended families and community," said Christy Campbell, Principal of Poe Elementary School.

Student work was also on display, highlighting their learning and connections to celebrations around the world, exchanges with pen pals in other countries, and public service announcements about the importance of acceptance. Special this year, the Poe community welcomed Ethnic Dance Chicago to instruct families in cultural dances. The evening culminated in a group dance.
