Beer tasting on tap for senior's Social and Well series

A recent community survey found that 20.3 percent of people age 65 and above are living alone in the Barrington area.

With studies demonstrating that isolation and loneliness pose serious health risks for older adults, the Barrington Area Council on Aging (BACOA) has launched a new Social and Well series designed to keep older adults connected and engaged to help improve overall wellness.

"It's really about quality of life," said BACOA Executive Director Joyce Palmquist. "With so many Barrington-area seniors living alone, it's important that older adults have opportunities to engage in activities they may not otherwise enjoy with other people."

The June program will feature a craft beer tasting at Flesk Brewing in the Barrington Ice House Mall, with July's program featuring bocce and bowling at Pinstripes. August's program will feature a Paint and Sip program at Pinot's Palette at the Arboretum of South Barrington.

Future programs also include unique dinners at local restaurants or themed outings.

Price points are typically around $40 and includes snacks. Cash bars are also available.

"Loneliness is a big problem as people age," said Palmquist. "Social circles shrink but research is illustrating how critical it is to stay involved with friends and the community. These programs are fun and can lift someone's spirit."

Registration is online at www.bacoa.org/socialwell.
