Geneva church to show 'Lakota People: American Disgrace'

On Friday, May 26, Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva invites you to view "Lakota People: American Disgrace" and two additional short documentaries, and examine the history and fate of the Oglala Lakota people. It will start at 7 p.m. at the church, 102 S. Second St.

Their history has loomed large in the United States from "Custer's Last Stand" to Wounded Knee. Throughout our country's history, the Oglala Lakota have consistently resisted the dislocation of its people and confiscation of its land.

This month's Friday Flick consists of three short documentaries describing the history, present conditions, and efforts to serve the Oglala Lakota people on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

The Pine Ridge Reservation is the poorest county in the United States and life expectancy of its residents is the lowest in the country. You will hear personal experiences and observations from presenters who have traveled to Pine Ridge and volunteered for Re-Member, a nonprofit organization working with the Oglala Lakota people on Pine Ridge.

Join them for an informative session and lively discussion regarding these people, their history, their current situation and what is being done to support them.

The film is part of the free monthly fourth-Friday Film programs that are sponsored by the Social Justice Team of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva. The public is encouraged to register at uusg.org/friday-flicks to receive email notices of future programs.
