Palatine Township presents Patriot, TOPS awards

Palatine Township officials presented the yearly Township Patriot and TOPS Awards during the 168th annual Town Hall meeting at the Palatine Township Center Tuesday, April 18.

The awards were presented by Palatine Township Supervisor Sharon Langlotz-Johnson.

"It is an honor to present these awards representing all whom have benefitted from these selfless individuals," Langlotz-Johnson said. "The entire township is fortunate to have so many dedicated and generous people willing to give of themselves."

The names of the award recipients and information about their different backgrounds is listed below:

• Outstanding Individual: Mike Hutchins is an avid volunteer, coordinating other volunteers from Northrup Grumman. Hutchins volunteers on Saturdays when the food pantry is open and always has a cheerful, helpful attitude while helping out. He has been instrumental in promoting the food pantry and garnering volunteers from the company he works for.

• Outstanding Individual: Ruben Sanchez helped in the 2016 Apple Tree program by picking up and dropping off donations from several of the drop-off locations for school supplies. He was always happy and willing to help in any way he could. For example, he made extra stops to overflowing drop off location bins and helped to unload school supplies. Sanchez is a past child recipient of the Apple Tree Program.

• Outstanding Community Service: Bernie Daugerdas from Tamarack Senior Living has been part of the Tamarack community for four years. She has a talent and passion for crafts and is the leader in the Tamaracks arts and crafts department. Daugerdas and a group of residents have been decorating the Palatine Township Easter basket and Angel Tree cutouts for several years.

• Outstanding Business: Tata Steel has been contributing to the Township Outreach programs since 2011. They have donated and volunteered their time to the Thanksgiving Basket Program. Many Tata Steel employees volunteer for sorting and distribution. A father employed at Tata and his daughter have volunteered together yearly for distribution of the baskets.

• Outstanding Volunteer Service Organization: American Legion Axillary Palatine Unit #690. For more than 40 years, the Woman's Auxiliary has been contributing to the township programs as part of "Community Services." Since the start of the Outreach Programs, they have donated and volunteered to help with Easter baskets, Apple Tree, Thanksgiving baskets, Angel Tree and Adopt- A- Family.

• Outstanding Volunteer Service Organization: Palatine Lions Club is the oldest service club in Palatine Township, established in 1925 as a community organization and dedicated to helping those less fortunate. The club has taken a special interest in those who are blind and deaf and coordinates its activities around helping these individuals.

Since 2011 The Lions have partnered with Palatine Township to provide both paper and electronic recycling services for the community. Lions Club members volunteer their time at these events, and they have grown to be highly valuable (and free) resource for Palatine Township residents.

• Palatine Township Patriot Award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed to the Palatine Township community. Liz Noe was recognized for her involvement with the Palatine Jaycees, Rotary Club of Palatine, leadership for Rotary's Oktoberfest, the Memorial Day Parade, Palatine St. Pat's Parade and in local fundraising for area nonprofits, as well as various accomplishments, including 2007 Ten Outstanding Young People in Illinois from the Jaycees and the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Award from the Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce.

Palatine Township provides numerous services and events for its 113,000 residents, and supports service agencies located within its boundaries. The township is one of the most heavily populated in Illinois, with a goal to enhance and improve the quality of life for all its residents.

Bordered by Lake-Cook Road., Huntington Road., Central Road and Wilke Road, residents living in all or part of the following communities are part of the township: Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Inverness, Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates, Barrington, South Barrington and Schaumburg.
