On May 24th: 'College Planning for Students with Learning Differences' at Five Seasons Northbrook

Two professionals who help high school students with learning disabilities make the transition to college lead a free program on Wednesday, May 24th at Five Seasons Family Sports Club in Northbrook.

"College Planning for Students with Learning Differences" begins at 7 p.m. at the club, 1300 Techny Road, guided by Jill Burstein and Jordan Burstein.

They will be joined by students who have worked with JJB Educational Consultants.

The event is especially designed for parents of students with various learning differences, such as ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, cognitive delays, and traumatic brain injuries.

Educators, psychologists, tutors and students would also benefit from the program. The session will cover what to do in high school to help your student transition to college, understanding varying support levels in college, and how to create a successful match between your child and a college.

Jill Burstein founded Northbrook-based JJB Educational Consulting in 2000. At the time, her son, Jordan, who has ADHD and other learning disabilities, was making his own transition to college.

"Through our experience, we realized that there are so many colleges that are fully equipped to serve those with learning differences but these students were either not attending college or failing because of a lack of appropriate support," says Jill Burstein. "Ever since, I have been passionate about helping these students get the education they deserve. There are so many great options for students with learning disabilities."

Jordan Burstein received a degree in psychology and with JJB Educational Consulting his academic struggles have been transformed into strengths as he easily connects with students.

"I understand how some students feel 'allergic' to school or struggle to succeed academically," he says. "I enjoy helping students strengthen their self-image and confidence through the process of finding their best college fit."

An associate member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, Jordan Burstein works with elementary and high school students as an executive functioning coach assisting them with time-management and organizational skills.

With a specialty working with students with learning differences, Jill Burstein has helped over 400 families find the best match for their student. She has a master's degree in special education, is a Certified Educational Planner and is a member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association.

During the session at Five Seasons, refreshments and handouts will be provided.
