92 adults on waiting list with The Literacy Connection

Ninety-two adults are waiting for a tutor right now, and the list continues to grow, according to The Literacy Connection.

Fifty potential learners are waiting in Elgin and 18 in Carpentersville; 52 are from Mexico, 14 are from the United States, and the others are from 13 different countries.

The adults waiting for a tutor need help to improve their English, reading and writing skills, or to prepare to become naturalized citizens.

Volunteers can attend a 12-hour training workshop, and then will be matched with an adult learner to help them improve their skills.

The training will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, May 8-17, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

The first hour of the workshop, on May 8, from 6-7 p.m., will provide information about the agency, tutor training, tutor-learner matches, and other Literacy Connection volunteer opportunities. Volunteers may stay to complete the course, or attend training in a future workshop.

Additional training dates are listed on the website, www.elginliteracy.org.

There is a $25 fee to cover the textbook, background check, and materials.

Registration is recommended, but walk-ins are welcome.

To register, complete the online form elginliteracy.org, email info@elginliteracy.org, or call (847) 742-6565 and provide your full name, address, email, phone number, and the workshop date you plan to attend.
