Mount Prospect announces new yard waste program

The Village of Mount Prospect announced a new unlimited yard waste collection program, which began April 3. All containerized yard waste, bags and/or rigid containers are no longer required to have the village imprinted yellow yard waste sticker affixed for collection.

There will be no limit on the number of yard waste bags or yard waste containers placed at the curb for collection. Yard waste should be placed at the curb according to current guidelines.

Acceptable yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, brush and twigs. Yard waste should be placed out for collection in either a 32-gallon maximum capacity rigid container or in kraft paper yard waste bags. Each rigid container and/or yard waste bag placed at the curb cannot exceed 50 pounds in weight.

Residents may also set out an unlimited number of properly prepared bundles of brush. Tree limbs/branches are not to exceed 3.5 inches in diameter, 5 feet in length or 50 pounds in weight and must be secured with a biodegradable material.

There is no change to the garbage, recycling, or yard waste collection day.

"Mount Prospect is dedicated to providing exceptional services, and residents having to go to a location to buy stickers are a thing of the past. We're trying to get the word out through all of our media channels about this update, and are hopeful that residents will be pleased," said Public Works Deputy Director Jason Leib.

Information regarding additional yard waste program enhancements, such as yard waste cart rentals and food scrap collection, will be coming in the near future.

Residents will be able to submit any unused yard waste stickers to the Finance or Public Works Departments (in person or by mail) for refunds. All unused stickers returned for reimbursement must be accompanied with a completed reimbursement form available on the village website.

Residents will receive reimbursement in the form of a check approximately two weeks after the village receives the stickers and reimbursement form. Deadline for submission is Dec. 15.
