Middle schoolers present 'My Son Pinocchio, Jr.' at Westminster Christian

The classic story of Pinocchio will be retold through the eyes of his toymaker father, Geppetto, when Westminster Christian Middle School presents Disney's "My Son Pinocchio, Jr." this weekend.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28-29, at the school, 2700 W. Highland Ave., Elgin.

After the Blue Fairy brings Pinocchio to life, Geppetto realizes being a father is a more difficult job than he expected. Geppetto's struggles become so real he seeks out the Blue Fairy to ask her to take him back. The story brings us on a journey of discovering what it means to become a parent and how to care for the child you are given.

"As a parent, the story resonated with me," said director Johanna Johnson. "Just like Geppetto, we do not get to choose the child we receive, but we learn to love them with our whole hearts and desire to see them grown into strong, confident people."

The cast consists of over 40 students ranging from third- to eighth-graders. The role of Stromboli the puppet master is played by eighth-grader Connor King.

"This production is kind of like Pinocchio, it's been through ups and downs, and after a little bit of time, it's grown into a real living show," Connor said. Connor has been in multiple productions at Westminster Christian School.

"Westminster theater is like no other; it challenges you to be better and encourages you to be who are," he added.

Sixth-grader Nathan Sevey earned the coveted role of Pinocchio. This is Sevey's first major role in a Westminster production. As he reflected on playing Pinocchio, Nathan says, "It is a lot of fun working with friends on lines, choreography, and the songs. We can't wait to perform for the crowd. I think it will be a great show."

The show brings to stage songs made popular by the original Disney film such as "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "I've Got No Strings."

Tickets are $8 for premium seats ($6 for seniors and students) and $6 for general admission ($5 for seniors and students). Tickets may be purchased at westminsterchristian.tix.com or at the door.
