CLC Music department presents five May concerts

More than 250 students and community members from the College of Lake County Music department will present five concerts May 5 through 10, featuring numerous styles of choral and instrumental music.

The ensembles will perform on the following dates: Monday Night and Tuesday Night Jazz Ensembles with Guest Trumpet Player Terell Stafford May 5; Choir of Lake County, CLC Singers, Chamber Singers and Gospel Choir May 6; Wind Ensemble May 7; Jazz Combos May 8; and Concert Band May 10. Concerts are held in the Mainstage Theatre of the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

40th Annual Guest Artist Concert with Terell Stafford, trumpet, 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 5. Stafford will solo with the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Michael Flack on selections that include "Magic Flea" by Sammy Nestico; "Blame it on My Youth" by Levant and Washington, "Bounced" by Terell Stafford, "Dear Ruby" by Terell Stafford and "It Happened to Me" by Dennis Mackrel. The Tuesday Night Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dave Hibbard, will perform "Shiny Stockings" by Frank Foster; "Do Nothing 'til you Hear From Me" by Duke Ellington and "Doxy" by Sonny Rollins. The concert's media sponsor is WDCB 90.9 FM.

Stafford has been hailed as "one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player" by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Since the mid-1990s, he has performed with groups such as Benny Golson's Sextet, McCoy Tyner's Sextet, Jimmy Heath Quintet and Big Band, Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra, Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Alumni Band. Stafford, with the Hamilton-Clayton Jazz Orchestra, performed on Diana Krall's Grammy-nominated "From this Moment On" (2006). He's a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra of New York City, which earned a Grammy in 2009 for best large ensemble, "Live at the Village Vanguard." Stafford's trumpet playing can be heard on more than 130 albums, is renowned in the jazz world as an educator, performer and leader. He and is director of jazz studies and chair of instrumental studies at Temple University, founder and band leader of the Terell Stafford Quintet and managing and artistic director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia.

Choral Concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6, featuring a large variety of musical styles, including contemporary, classical and gospel. Enjoy selections from Eric Whitacre's "Three Flower Songs," "Dirait-on" by Morten Lauridsen, excerpts from Vivaldi's "Gloria," Handel's "Coronation Anthem No. 2," a "My Fair Lady" medley and "The Awakening" by Joseph M. Martin. The concert is performed by more than 125 singers from Choir of Lake County and CLC Singers (Jeffrey DeLay, director), Chamber Singers (Ingrid Mikolajczyk, director) and Gospel Choir (Charles Thomas Hayes, director).

Wind Ensemble Concert, 4 p.m., Sunday, May 7. Dr. Michael Flack will conduct the ensemble in "Moorside March" by Gustav Holst, "Symphony No. 2" by Frank Ticheli, "Tribute to Irving Berlin" arranged by Warren Barker, "Passion in Paint" by Henri Rene and "Russian Folk Dances" by Dan Rager.

The jazz combos, directed by Dr. Michael Flack and John Mose, will present a free concert in Room P101 on Monday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m.

The Concert Band, conducted by John Mose, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10. The 60-member band's program features "Our Director March" by F.E. Bigelow, "An Outdoor Overture" and "Down a Country Lane" by Aaron Copland, "October" by Eric Whitacre, selections from "The Wizard of Oz" by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg and a medley from "Beauty and the Beast" by Alan Menken and by Howard Ashman and "Festive Overture" by Dmitri Shostakovich.

Ticket information: Concert prices range from $5 to $10 (except the Jazz Combos, which is free). Instrumental music concerts are free to students under age 18. The Box Office is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 60 minutes prior to each performance. Please purchase your tickets in advance or arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the performance. Due to the quiet nature of many songs, choral concerts are not appropriate for children under age 3.

Community members are invited to participate in CLC Music department ensembles or take private lessons for college credit or personal enrichment. Local musicians are invited to join the ensembles during Fall Semester, which begins Aug. 20, 2017.
