Join Arbor Day celebration Saturday in Elburn

For the 19th consecutive year, the Village of Elburn has qualified as a Tree City USA. Thanks to the support of the village trustees and the work of the village tree board. The Tree City USA program is a nationally sponsored certification program created and managed by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

The Arbor Day celebration begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, at the Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St.

Join village officials, the tree board, the park commission, the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and others in planting a tree in the park. There will be a short ceremony reading the Arbor Day proclamation, Joyce Kilmer's famous poem about trees, and an explanation of the importance of Arbor Day.

After the ceremony, join the Elburn Park Commission for an open house in the village hall. The park commission seeks public input for park improvements, locations, new equipment and ways to improve the existing park amenities. Stop by for refreshments and talk to the park commissioners about your ideas.

There are seven important reasons to plant trees: conserving energy, cleaning the air, providing habitat for songbirds, increasing your home's value, keeping rivers and streams clean, fighting global warming, and enhancing the aesthetics of the community.

The village appreciates the generosity of Dan Strang of Strang Inc. in Kaneville for the donation of this year's Arbor Day tree.
