Hanover Township awarded grant to deliver meals for seniors

More than 60 Hanover Township homebound residents will soon receive weekend meals as a result of an $18,123, one-time funding grant from the Illinois Department of Aging.

The township's Home Delivered Meal program currently delivers meals Monday through Friday. The grant allows the township to purchase a convection oven to produce more meals for volunteer drivers to deliver on Saturdays, ensuring residents receive optimal nutrition on the weekends.

"Hanover Township has been successful in obtaining this grant to grow and support this much-needed program," said Brian P. McGuire, Hanover Township supervisor. "The meal delivery program not only provides food to shut-ins, the program also provides an opportunity for our volunteer drivers to connect with homebound individuals for socialization, which is vital in maintaining wellness."

Program participants are referred through the Catholic Charities Northwest or referrals through an intake process that assesses determination of need.

The township nutrition program allows residents a choice of two meal options, with all meals prepared on-site. This unique practice also affords the program to expedite services for clients coming home from the hospital.
