Garlands troupe to present 'Radio Days'

The Garlands Play Readers will bring audiences back to the "good ol' days" with their variety show, "Radio Days of the '30s, '40s and '50s," presented at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, and Saturday, April 29, on the main stage at The Garlands Center for the Performing Arts, 1000 Garlands Lane, Barrington.

The troupe of 15-plus thespians, all of whom live at The Garlands of Barrington, will lip-sync and act their way down memory lane in a series of carefully selected song, dance and sketch comedy bits. Audiences will enjoy seeing favorite old time radio commercials "live and in Technicolor." Also, bringing back fond memories will be The Garlands' interpretations of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing the Foxtrot, Johnny Carson cracking jokes as well as guest appearances from the Andrew Sisters and the Three Tenors.

Many members of the cast, all in their 70s and 80s, dabbled in the arts in their high school and college years, while others are new to the stage. All share a passion for entertaining and having a blast while rehearsing and putting on a show.

"The older adults who choose to engage in theatrical pursuits with The Garlands Play Readers really love the opportunity to challenge their abilities, meet new people and enjoy the rehearsal and performance experience," said director Nathaniel Szkil, lifestyle specialist at the community. "The Garlands Play Readers offers our members an ideal opportunity to display their acting, singing and dramatic talents while inspiring others to get involved. Our shows are often unpredictable and always well received by neighbors, family and friends."
