Community can celebrate diversity at Pop-Up Museum

Lake County Forest Preserve District, Lake County Discovery Museum, and Brushwood Center are partnering to bring a Pop-Up Museum to the Brushwood Gallery from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, May 9.

Complementing Brushwood Center's featured art exhibit, "Endangered Beauty," the Pop-Up Museum will focus on "celebrating diversity."

A pop-up museum is a temporary exhibit focused on bringing people together through stories, art and objects. A theme and venue are chosen and the community is invited to bring on-topic objects to share.

On May 9, community members are invited to bring an object, a story, a photograph, a family recipe, a work of art, or something similar that they believe highlights how they contribute to the diversity in their community.

This may mean highlighting ethnicity, family histories, a profession, or a skill. Participants are also encouraged to bring nature photography or art that showcases the biodiversity of the environment.

"Endangered Beauty" showcases the art of photographer Carol Freeman, who works to document Illinois' 483 threatened and endangered plant, animal, and insect species.

Instead of focusing on the negative connotations of endangered plants and creatures - what nature may be lacking or in danger of losing - this Pop-Up Museum will focus on why diversity is important for both nature and humans.

Just as it is crucial to have biodiversity of plants and animals in their natural ecosystems, it is important for human communities to be diverse. A diverse ecosystem has more sources of food, shelter, and companionship, and is stronger in the face of disturbances.

In the same way, people are stronger in diverse communities, where greater awareness and understanding of one another make a more resilient human ecosystem.

This is an opportunity for members of the community, especially children and families, to learn more about their friends and neighbors, and the nature that surrounds their schools, homes and workplaces.

Admission is free and no registration is required.

Brushwood Center is at 21850 N. Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods.
