Robert Maday, the subject of a 26-hour September manhunt after he overpowered two state's attorney guards, was officially charged Tuesday on counts related to one of the crimes he's accused of committing while being sought.
Cook County prosecutors levied charges of aggravated vehicular hijacking and attempted armed robbery in connection with a Sept. 18 incident in which they say Maday accosted a woman in the parking lot of the Hoffman Estates business where she worked, displayed a handgun and took her 2004 Volkswagen Jetta.
Maday was recaptured when he crashed the car a few hours later in West Chicago.
Cook County Circuit Judge Thomas Fecarotta ordered Maday held without bond, but that is something of a purely legal question since Maday has been ordered to serve a 13-year sentence for a series of robberies in 2008 and is in federal custody in connection with the escape. He was being transported to Cook County court for sentencing on the robbery charges when he managed to escape custody. He was returned to Fecarotta's courtroom on Oct. 26 for completion of that sentencing.
In the meantime, he continues to face federal charges in connection with bank robberies he has admitted to committing in 2008, and the federal government continues to prepare charges against him in connection with the escape.
Security in the Cook County courtroom Tuesday was prominent although not as heavy as the large detail that surrounded him during his October sentencing. He was immediately transferred to federal custody after the brief hearing.
He will next appear in Rolling Meadows on the carjacking charges Dec. 23.
