When Des Plaines couple Stanley and Sandy Miller put their three kids in the family van and went for a drive Sunday night, authorities said it wasn't a leisurely trip they had planned.
The couple drove to a neighborhood in Chicago's Northwest side and attempted to burglarize a home while the children waited in the vehicle, a prosecutor said.
The owner of the home on the 4100 block of North Pulaski Road received an alert on her cell phone when the couple tripped the burglar alarm upon entering the house, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said Wednesday.
The homeowner called police. Conklin said authorities caught the Millers in the act of stealing and found their three children - 2, 8 and 9 years old - sitting outside in the Ford van.
The couple was charged with felony residential burglary. Cook County Judge Michael Brown Tuesday set bond at $75,000 for Stanley Miller, 28, and $50,000 for Sandy Miller, 29. The couple will appear for a preliminary hearing Nov. 16 in Northwest Felony Court.
