Civil War rite:
The 8th Illinois Cavalry Civil War re-enactment regiment will have a Veterans Day service at 10 a.m. today at the Newton War Memorial in the Batavia West-Side Cemetery, Route 31 and Morton St. Nine men from Batavia served with the 8th from 1861 to 1865. The service will visit the grave of one of them, Davis Gillot.
USO-style night:
Get "In the Mood" to dance the night away at the American Legion Hall, 22 S. Second St., Geneva, at 7 tonight with a 1940s-style USO party. It marks the closing of the Geneva History Center's "Faces of War" exhibit on Friday. Tickets are $15 for center members and $20 for others; $5 discount for those in military uniform. Dog obedience trial:
Fox Valley Dog Training Club will host its 58th annual Obedience Trial and 4th annual Rally Trial Sunday at the Kane County Fairgrounds. Spectators are welcome to watch many breeds of dogs competing at the three main levels of Obedience and three levels of Rally. Show hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free. Information can be found at fvdtc.org.
Roadwork Monday:
Beginning Monday, weather-permitting, the Kane County Transportation Department will conduct a geotechnical investigation at Keslinger Road, west of Bunker Road, in anticipation of bridge replacement. The work will require a single lane closure and minor delays are expected. Flaggers will direct traffic, and the work should take at least two days. For details, call Mike Zakosek at (630) 584-1170.
Sherman restricts visitations:
Sherman Hospital in Elgin has enacted a temporary visitor limitation policy to help protect patients against the spread of H1N1 virus. Visitors that have a fever or respiratory illness should not visit patients. Except in extraordinary circumstances, there will be no visitors younger than 16 and no more than two visitors at a time allowed in a room. Pregnant women and people with asthma should not visit during the flu season either. Sherman officials said the policy will be reviewed at a later date, but did not give a time frame for when the restrictions would be lifted.
Craft sale results:
More than $18,000 was raised for local charities at the Batavia Mothers' Club Foundation's 24th Annual Autumn Arts & Crafts Show Oct. 17. More than 1,000 shoppers attended. Proceeds are distributed to agencies whose work improves the lives of children and families in Batavia.
