Help Rylie

The McHenry County Sheriff's Department, in conjunction with the Lake in the Hills Police Department, will be holding a bowling fundraiser for Rylie Mogan, 8, who is battling a rare form a cancer. Her father is a long-time sergeant with the Lake in the Hills police. The fundraiser will be held Saturday, Nov. 7, at McGarry's Bowl in Harvard. McHenry County Adult Correctional Facility Chief Dan Sedlock has pledged to shave his head if the event raises $1,000. Other employees will shave their heads at the event to show solidarity with Rylie. For details, call (815) 560-2275.

Veterans Day dinner in Elgin

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Watch City VFW Post 1307 will hold a Veterans Day dinner and dance with cocktails beginning at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6. The post will also celebrate its 80th anniversary at the event, which is open to the public. A $6 donation is requested at the door. The VFW is at 1601 Weld Road, Elgin. Call (847) 888-9809.

Concert for veterans

Algonquin's Westfield Community School is holding a free concert in honor of Veterans Day. The eighth-grade band, orchestra and choir will perform patriotic music at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Call (847) 458-1900.

Swine flu and you

The McHenry County Department of Health has a call center and Web page for those who need more information about the H1N1 flu outbreak, symptoms and prevention. That phone number is (815) 334-2800, and you can view the site at mcdh.info. Moreover, the department will send out mailers detailing similar information.
