Long-lost trolley car is welcomed home to South Elgin
Car 304, where are you?
The answer: at the Fox River Trolley Museum - at long last.
The South Elgin museum welcomed its newest acquisition on Tuesday.
Car 304, built by the St. Louis Car Co. in 1923, is returning to the last surviving remnant of the railroad for which it was built. It has spent over 74 years in Ohio museums. The closing of those museums led to a fundraising effort by the South Elgin museum. A sealed bid on Oct. 1 was accepted, and on Tuesday, museum officials welcomed home the former denizen of the AE&FRE line, which provided service between Carpentersville and Yorkville for 12 years in the early part of the 20th century.
