This is in response to George Kocan's Nov. 3 letter that women have no place in our national politics. Wow, George, where have you been? I felt like I was reading a piece from the 1960s.
George's argument included that Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected governor of California and Jesse Ventura also was elected governor of Minnesota because of their "bold and vigorous masculinity." If these two individuals were elected to their offices because of their physiques or because they are entertainment personalities or combination of both, as was probably the case, that is unfortunate.
As the old saying goes, two wrongs don't make a right. Their election to office does not justify only electing men to the national/international political scene. If one follow's George's logic, we should consider Sylvester Stallone and Mike Tyson as future national politicians.
Our political leaders should be elected because of their views and intelligence, not because of their sex or the way they look. Whoever is elected President of the United States at any given time will have the respect of other countries because they have the resources of the U.S. backing them up.
Maybe if more women were elected to national office, we'd have less war, less poverty and more cooperation among countries. Maybe we need a little more "estrogen," as George puts it, on the national political scene.
