A Champaign man Saturday was charged with retail theft for trying to return some men's ties he allegedly had just taken from a store rack and placed in a bag.

Flozell Shields, 53 of Hedge Road in Champaign, was charged with felony retail theft after he went into a Kohl's store in Schaumburg on Friday morning, walked up to a tie rack in the men's department and removed six ties, authorities said.

He then allegedly put those ties into his own bag and went to the customer service counter in an attempt to get a refund, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Haley Peck.

The customer service representative refused the refund and notified the Schaumburg police, said Peck.

Shields, a maintenance man at a hotel in Champaign, had a prior record of retail theft dating back to the mid-1990s.

Judge Alfred Levinson ordered a $10,000 bond for Shields and continued the case to 9 a.m. on Nov. 24 in Room 108 at Cook County Circuit Court in Rolling Meadows.
