A 56-year-old Spring Grove man has been charged with multiple drug offenses after Lakemoor police discovered hypodermic syringes in his car following a routine traffic stop.
Clayton Gillaspy, of the 38000 block of North Fourth Street in Spring Grove, was spotted driving west on Route 120 with an unregistered license plate at 7 p.m. on Oct. 5, said Sgt. Rick Iverson of the Lakemoor Police Department.
During the stop, officers noticed a couple of tin boxes on the floor of the front seat of the car. When officers asked about the boxes, Gillaspy and his unidentified passenger both denied ownership of them, Iverson said.
Iverson said officers became suspicious of the items because the boxes showed some white residue and liquid on the cover.
Gillaspy was asked to exit the vehicle and a search was conducted by a K-9 unit from the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, Iverson said.
The dog picked up the scent of drugs inside of a pink pouch inside the car, where officers discovered the syringes and additional white residue. The contents of the syringes were tested and came back positive for methamphetamines.
Gillaspy was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance under 500 milligrams, unlawful possession of hypodermic syringes, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and no valid registration.
He was transported to McHenry County Jail where he paid 10 percent of his $16,000 bond. He is due back in court in November regarding the charges.
