Naperville gets energy grant:

Naperville has received nearly $1.4 million through the U.S. Department of Energy for a series of initiatives to promote energy efficiency. They include: a city-conducted home energy audit for residents 55 and older living in a home built before 1980; a revolving loan program to provide interest-free loans to small businesses to reduce energy use; a commercial grant program to provide funding for businesses making energy-efficient improvements; a parking guidance system for city parking garages; and LED lights for the fire station 10.

Celebrate public lands:

In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Naperville Park District is offering "buy 1, get 1 free" admission to the Millennium Carillon in Moser Town from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Regular admission is $3. The 72-bell carillon is along the downtown Riverwalk. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top of the tower to enjoy a view that includes the Chicago skyline on clear days. Contact family in Iraq:

Families who have service personnel stationed in Iraq can have a free, half-hour video conference with their loved one at Benedictine University in Lisle. Freedom Calls Foundation is partnering with the university to offer the video conference to families who have a member stationed in one of five camps - Camp Taji, Al Asad Air Base, Camp Fallujah, Camp Victory (Baghdad) and Camp Taqaddum. CUB offers phone-bill tips:

The Citizens Utility Board will offer a free "phone-bill clinic" from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 6 at Naperville city hall, 400 S. Eagle St. Organizers say the clinic will show customers how to cut their local and long-distance bills by an average of $200 a year. Participants should bring their phone bills so CUB experts can analyze them and offer tips. For details, visit www.CitizensUtilityBoard.org.

Film fest shows flicks nightly:

The Naperville Independent Film Festival continues from 5 p.m. to midnight today through Friday, Sept. 25, at Ogden 6 Theatre, 1227 E. Ogden Ave., and 6:30 to 11 p.m. at Holiday Inn Select, 1801 N. Naper Blvd. Tickets to the screenings are $3 or buy two and get one free at Ogden 6. Patrons also can check out MuVChat during a free showing of "Zoolander" at 9 p.m. Thursday at Hollywood Palms Cinema, 352 S. Route 59. The festival culminates in an Awards Gala with special guest celebrities from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Hollywood Palms. Tickets are $25 and include dinner.

Park district seeks volunteers:

West Chicago Park District is looking for volunteers to help clean recently acquired land adjacent Pioneer Park, 479 Forest Ave. Crews will work from 9 a.m. until noon Saturday, Sept. 26, as part of the Chicago Wilderness Corporate Council Day of Service.
