Palatine resident Jennifer McDevitt's second race against brain cancer will be Aug. 16.
McDevitt was diagnosed with a brain tumor six years ago but refused to give up a fight that seemed insurmountable at the onset. While recovering from what she jokingly calls "too much radiation in the brain," McDevitt decided to take up running as a way to distract herself from all of the negativity that came with her affliction. A year ago, McDevitt started "Joggin for the Noggin" to raise money to fight brain cancer.
To date McDevitt has run seven marathons, five while undergoing chemotherapy. While she said that she would run at least one marathon every year, her new treatment has caused her to take a break from the running, which makes this year's run even more important to her cause.
Joggin for the Noggin 5K Run/Walk will benefit families and patients whose lives have been affected by brain cancer. All proceeds will go to the Tug McGraw Foundation and the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Clinic at Duke University Medical Center.
Last year the first Joggin for the Noggin 5K Run/Walk raised more than $30,000 for brain tumor research.

This year's race will be at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in Palatine. Durty Nellie's Bar in Palatine will host a post race party that includes live entertainment, a silent auction and a raffle. Prizes will also be awarded to the top male, female and jogging stroller participants.
