Voters in Kane and McHenry counties head to the polls Tuesday to vote in primary elections.
Here is a guide to who's running and what's at stake in some of the key races.
Kane County
Dundee Township
Who's running: Supervisor Sue Harney faces challenges from Don Rage and Pamela Griffin. Lee Barrett and Michael Bielak are facing off for township assessor.
Six are seeking four trustee seats: Charlton Behm, Paul Lanspa, David Edwards, Margaret Scarpelli, JoAnn Fritz and Kenneth Schaffer. All are Republicans.
What's at stake: Rage has gone after Harney for what he claims is "poor stewardship of taxpayer money." Harney has accused Rage of playing politics, saying township money has been spent in accordance with grant guidelines. Griffin has mostly stayed out of the fray, criticizing her opponents for "negative" campaigning.
City of Elgin
Who's running: Six candidates are vying for a single 2-year council seat: Charlene Sligting, Michael Robins, Al Fernandez, Mike Warren, Emi Morales and Brenda Rodgers.
What's at stake: This is for the unexpired term of Mike Powers, who resigned last year. Four candidates will make it through the primary and run for the seat in April. Ten others are vying for three, 4-year seats in April.
Elgin Township
Who's running: Six Democrats are running for four seats: Ana Ortiz, Steve Corn, Carol Rauschenberger, Hidayat Khan, Deborah Willis and William Becker. Republicans await them in April.
McHenry County
Algonquin Township
Who's running: Five Republicans are vying for four trustee seats: Mark Guerra, Niels Sorensen, Linda Lance, Lowell Cutsforth and Joseph Powalowski.
Grafton Township
Who's running: Linda Moore is challenging Supervisor John Rossi. John Freund and Mike Romanelli are vying for highway commissioner. Six are seeking four trustee seats: Gerry McMahon, Barbara Murphy, Betty Zirk, Don Glogovsky, Lois Brothers and Rob LaPorta. All are Republicans.
What's at stake: Rossi and the current board - Brothers, Murphy, LaPorta and Zirk - plan to build a new $3.5 million township hall. Moore and her slate - Glogovsky and McMahon - say they will not build the township hall.
Nunda Township
Who's running: Dennis Jagla and Alan Weaver will face off for assessor. Six are seeking four trustee seats: Tom Palmer, Joni Smith, James Schlader, Richard Meyers, Kelvin Jennings and Kevin Sarnwick. All are Republicans.
McHenry Township
Who's running: Five Republicans are seeking four trustee seats: Craig Adams, Kathleen Kuchta, Marsha Nelson, James Condon and Vincent Nett.
