A 34-year-old Carpentersville man was arrested early Tuesday on charges he beat his wife with his fists and a golf club so severely that the couple's juvenile son stabbed him to protect his mother.

Israel C. Martinez, of 516 Elm Ridge Road #7A, faces charges of attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with a weapon and aggravated domestic battery, in connection with the alleged attack in the front parking lot of the Meadowdale Apartments.

Carpentersville police said Martinez told officers he suspected his wife was unfaithful after calling her workplace Monday evening and learning she was not there.

When the 35-year-old woman arrived in the parking lot alone a few minutes after midnight Tuesday, police said, the couple argued until Martinez began hitting her with his fists and the golf club.

The couple's son, whose age was not disclosed, intervened with a pocket knife, stabbing his father in the left arm and in the left rib area to stop the beating, police said. The boy was not charged.

The victim was taken to Sherman Hospital with visible marks on her forehead and body, police said. Martinez also was transported to Sherman, where he was treated for the stab wounds and later arrested then transported to the Kane County jail.

In court Tuesday, Assistant Kane County State's Attorney Alice Hendricksen asked for a $500,000 bail for Martinez, saying that as a noncitizen he would be a flight risk. The victim also had an order of protection against him at the time of the attack, Hendricksen said.

Circuit Court Judge John A. Noverini set bail even higher, at $750,000, meaning Martinez will need to post $75,000 to go free.

Martinez' next court date is on Dec. 17 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
