The American Psychiatric Association classifies problem and pathological gambling as a compulsive disorder.

• Symptoms are similar to alcohol or drug addiction.

• Some studies show problem gamblers have increased releases of brain chemicals that prompt pleasure when wagering.

• Several studies suggest a genetic link and environmental factors.

• Most treatment plans focus on 12-step counseling and inpatient measures.

Experts say people who show 5 or more of the following symptoms may have a problem and need treatment:

•Preoccupation with gambling-related thoughts

•Need to gamble more money for excitement

•Restlessness/irritability when trying to stop gambling

•Gambling to escape from problems, improve mood

•Chasing losses often

•Lying about gambling

•Committing illegal acts to finance bets

•Jeopardizing relationships, work or education

•Borrowing money to gamble, cover losses

•Repeated attempts to control, quit betting
