What is Subscriber Total Access?

It's the Daily Herald's new subscription plan, which provides complete access to the Daily Herald's full range of content on all platforms -- print, online, mobile phones, tablet devices and e-editions. Subscriber Total Access members also will receive opportunities to participate in events providing access to Daily Herald columnists, reporters and editors. Access to dailyherald.com for non-subscribers will be limited to 15 page views every 30 days without paying for digital access. Digital only access is also available, but without delivery of the print editions or access to other non-digital benefits of Subscriber Total Access.

What does it cost?

Daily Herald print subscribers will pay $1 per week beyond their current subscription cost for Subscriber Total Access. Digital-only subscribers will pay $19.99 every 30 days for unlimited access to Daily Herald on digital platforms -- online, mobile phones, tablet devices and e-editions.

How will I be billed?

Subscriber Total Access members will have the $1 per week fee included in the regular Daily Herald newspaper invoice or EZ Pay charge. Digital-only subscribers will be asked to provide a credit card, which will be charged the $19.99 fee every 30 days.

Online news always has been free. Why are you starting to charge for it?

Our goal has always been to provide the very best, most trusted news coverage in your community. To do that, we make a substantial investment in a large staff of reporters and editors to provide the news and information that matters to you. Charging for our online reporting and content, as we do in print, ensures that we can continue to provide this coverage and continue to invest in our news coverage and in improvements to it. Newspapers all over the country are realizing that they can no longer rely only on the income of advertisers only to create and sustain the kind of journalism you and your community deserves. You expect our standards to be second to none... and the cost of reporters and writers, photographers and editors require this shift in policy.

Just as you recognize the value of our journalism, we are particularly aware of the value of our home delivery subscribers' longtime support of the Daily Herald. Therefore, print subscribers will pay far less for digital coverage than customers who do not subscribe to the print newspaper.

Does this mean you will stop including advertising at dailyherald.com?

No, just as in the printed newspaper, online advertising revenue is an important part of funding the resources needed to cover the news and meet your expectations.

What is included in Subscriber Total Access?

Effective Sept. 7, subscribers will receive:

• Home delivery of the Daily Herald, suburban Chicago's #1 news source
• Complete access to all dailyherald.com content, including stories, columns and blogs by our experts, photos, archives and videos
• stories, photos, archives and videos
• Use of the Daily Herald mobile app for both iPhone and Android smartphones
• Access to the iPad app that expands the portability of the suburban coverage you expect from the Daily Herald. An Android tablet application will be available later this year
• New "electronic editions" of the Daily Herald, exact replicas of the printed paper that enable you to read the newspaper online -- in "newspaper form" -- even when you're out of town
• Daily news headlines delivered via e-mail directly to your PC, mobile phone or tablet
• Exclusive opportunities to interact with Daily Herald columnists and experts at Subscriber Total Access events across the suburbs

If I'm not a subscriber, will I be able to read stories on dailyherald.com?

Beginning Sept. 7, non-subscribers will be allowed 15 "clicks" or page views every 30 days at no charge. Examples of things that amount to a click on the website include an article, a photo gallery, a video, a page of story comments, etc. After the 15th "click," non-digital subscribers will be unable to access further content without paying the subscription price. This guideline applies to most articles on dailyherald.com, but there are exceptions as noted below.

Certain premium content -- including columns, blogs and opinion pieces -- will be available only to subscribers. We intend to call attention to these premium items with a special icon.

Some select online content -- such as the home page, section fronts, weather, advertising, classifieds, wedding announcements, obituaries and content submitted by users - will be free and available to everyone.

How will you keep track of how many articles people have read?

We have partnered with a technology provider, Press+, to keep track of non-subscriber access and to ensure subscribers receive everything to which they are entitled.

I am a home delivery subscriber. What do I have to do in order to read stories on dailyherald.com?

You will be asked to create a Press+ account by giving an email address and creating your own password. We will link your name, Daily Herald account number, and telephone number to your Press+ account, and you will receive full access to all content as long as you are signed in. Once your account has been created, you can log in from any computer. You will not need to enter any credit card information if you are a current Daily Herald subscriber.

How do I download the iPad or tablet app that is part of my Subscriber Total Access package?

You can download the iPad app from the Apple store. After opening the app, you will be prompted to enter your Press+ account information to access the content within the app. An app for Android tablets is under development and will be available soon. When it is, you'll need to download the new app from the Android store. Once downloaded, you will be given information on how to access the content.

How do I download the mobile phone app that is part of my Subscriber Total Access package?

If you already have one of our mobile phone apps, continue using it for now. If you don't have one, download it from the Apple or the Android store. In either case, we are developing an even better mobile phone app, and we'll alert you when it's available. When it is, you'll need to download the new app from the Apple or Android store. Once downloaded, you will be given information on how to access the content.

What if I don't want to be a part of Subscriber Total Access?

If you do not want to be part of the Subscriber Total Access program and you receive your invoice through the mail, you will see an option on the bill to pay for print only. If you are an EZ Pay customer where your credit or debit card is automatically charged, please go to the website and/or phone number in the letter sent to your home.
