Boys soccer: Glasstetter inspires St. Viator's rout of St. Patrick

Jack Glasstetter was not on the 2019 St. Viator boys soccer roster, but the sophomore heard plenty about the pasting his club took the last time it played St. Patrick.

The Lions (4-2-2, 4-2-1), inspired by Glasstetter, would avenge that 10-1 loss in a big way, scoring a season-high 6 goals en route to an impressive 6-1 victory Wednesday over their East Suburban Catholic Conference rival.

"I obviously wasn't on that 2019 team but there was a lot of talk beforehand from the juniors and seniors who were, so we wanted to make sure to go out and play our best and beat them the way they did to us," said Glasstetter.

Just two days after playing reigning Class 2A state champion Benet Academy even for 80 thrilling minutes in a 2-1 loss, the visiting Shamrocks (6-4-0, 5-4-0) came out flat, struggling to play their possession game, thanks in part to a Lions squad that outworked their guests all over the park.

"I was real proud of the effort, work rate and energy the boys brought this afternoon, it was a real team effort from the all of them," said a beaming Mike Taylor, the Lions' longtime head coach.

It took just 7 minutes for the home side to find the opener with the first of two from Glasstetter coming after Connor Giroux set his teammate free.

Shamrocks co-captain Sebastian Estrada netted the equalizer two minutes later, but the visitors missed on a chance to go ahead when a wide open Xavier Gamez rattled the bar in the 22nd minute.

Glasstetter seized the next opportunity that came when he and Giroux combined once again as he finished at back post a marvelous helper.

Conrad Glodz would make it a 3-goal advantage six minutes before the intermission with a brilliant individual effort into the far corner.

"Conrad's goal was the best of the six today," said Taylor. "He worked hard to keep the ball under control and with him still able to keep the ball on his foot he poked it under the keeper."

With the Lions' back line of Dominick DeJulio, Riley DiMarco, Matt Oleksyk and Taylor Petrillo staying composed and organized in front of keeper Matt Marchiori, while Sebastian Howarth helped his club win the battle in the midfield, the Shamrocks were unable to get anything of quality on frame.

Brendan Oleksak added to the Lions' lead in the 64th minute, with Howarth earning the assist, until a late double from Jean-Claude Thomas finished the visitors off for good.

"I felt like that third goal kind of took the wind out of them. It was a great win for us today," said Glasstetter.

Next up for the Lions is Marist on the road next Monday, while the Shamrocks have Marian Catholic that same day.
