Girls swimming: Schaumburg has strong day at sectional

Schaumburg's girls swimming team had an interesting day at the York sectional Saturday, equaling Downers Grove North with seven qualifiers to next weekend's state finals at New Trier.

Saxons' sophomore Nina Mollin and her senior sister, Hana, spent a lot of time on the podium. Nina won the 500 freestyle (4:56.48) and the 200 individual medley (2:03.11), just ahead of her sister (2:06.64). Hana took third in the 100 backstroke in 57.54. They joined forces with sophomore Madison Dohrn and senior Lynda Steen to post second-place finishes in the 400 freestyle relay (3:32.34) and 200 medley relay (1:46.08). Dohrn also qualified in the backstroke with a second-place finish.

"Today was probably the best day ever, because both of our relays got into state, so we're going to have a good team going to state," Nina Mollin said. "It's crazy how fast it was today."

Maine West was led by freshman Michelle Kaner, who won two events - the 100 freestyle (52.23) and 100 backstroke (56.25).

Kaner - like Conant's Megumi Komoto - will be a first-timer at state. What's her perception of that event?

"I've watched sectionals, and I know the crowd is crazy," Kaner said. "I think it's going to be 10 times like this. The nerves are going to be crazy."

Komoto won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 56.29.

DGN won the team title with 294 points.

At Deerfield: Maine South senior Annika Wagner was a double winner, while Buffalo Grove will be sending host of individuals and relay teams to the state meet after action at the Deerfield sectional Saturday.

Wagner captured first place for the Hawks in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.92) and the 500 free (4:58.90).

Buffalo Grove will send its 200 medley relay team and its 200 free relay team to New Trier for state next weekend after both teams finished second on Saturday.

The Bison's 200 medley team of Emilia Jedryka, Jillian Dombroski, Reese Frighetto and Gabriela Surdyka finished in a time of 1:47.78 to advance, while the 200 free relay quartet of Jedryka, Gabriela Surdyka, Stefanie Surdyka and Frighetto finished in 1:37.31.

Other advancers for BG included Frighetto and Stefanie Surdyka in the 50 free, Vivian Wilson and Gillian Karsten in diving and Stefanie Surdyka in the 100 free.

Maine South also advanced its 200 medley relay team of Natalie Wajda, Wagner, Nelly Hadlaw and Natalie Bryant as well as its 400 free relay squad of Wajda, Bryant, Hadlaw and Wagner.

Stevenson ran away with the team championship, rolling up 316 points. Buffalo Grove was second with 198 and Loyola third with 176.
