Girls golf: Barrington has 1 shot lead on Stevenson at state tournament

In head coach Tim Martin's first season, the Barrington girls golf team stands poised to win the program's first state championship.

The Fillies, who finished second at the state finals the past three years under retired Hall of Fame coach Jodi Schoeck, will need to hold off neighboring Stevenson to win the title in Saturday's final round at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur.

Barrington shot a 302 Friday and leads Stevenson by 1 shot going into Saturday's final round.

Senior Caroline Smith led the Fillies on Friday with a 2-over par 74, which was also tied for the third best individual score of the day.

Sophomore Sophia Sulkar, senior Samantha Saile and sophomore Mara Janess each shot 76s for Barrington. Junior Sophia Denison (81) and senior Phebe Chen (83) also competed for the Fillies.

Vernon Hills freshman Lexi Schulman and Glenbrook South's Maria Perakis each shot 73 to tie for the lead.

Prospect's Kelly Kavanagh had a 79 and is tied for 25th place, while Schaumburg's Lauren Christians shot a 90.

In the Class 1A tournament at Red Tail in Decatur, St. Viator shot a 354 and is in seventh place.

Junior Cate Reisenger led the Lions with a 78, while junior Paige Klostermann (85), junior Jill Doherty (92) and junior Katie Peterson (99) also scored.
