Torrential rains keeping Chicago White Sox groundskeeper Bossard busy

What happens if you're a major-league groundskeeper and 115,00 gallons worth of rain falls on your baseball field?

You get to work.

"Trying evening," veteran White Sox groundskeeper Roger Bossard said of Monday night. "I've got a 24-man crew and we stayed until 10:15. We scraped close to three tons of (dirt) off."

The Sox and Royals played a Memorial Day matinee at Guaranteed Rate Field that was twice delayed by heavy rain before finally being suspended with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and the game tied at 1-1.

Before play resumed late Tuesday afternoon, Bossard and his crew had to basically lay down a new infield. It took a half ton of dirt, but Bossard has a 14-ton supply sitting behind the center-field fence.

"We are glad he's on our side being able to do what he does out there on the field," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said.

Bossard is in his 53rd year as the Sox's head groundskeeper. He's used to dealing with tough conditions, but not like the first two months of this season.

"I've seen a lot of bad weather," Bossard said. "Nothing like this year. It's really been amazing. Last May, we had a lot of rain. We had over eight inches of rain. We haven't had that much rain this year, but it seems like every time the White Sox come in town, rain's on the tail of the plane. It's, I guess, something as a groundskeeper I've got to deal with."

Anderson update:

Tim Anderson was able to pinch run in Tuesday afternoon's suspended game, but he wasn't in the starting lineup for the fourth straight game.

Anderson has a sore right wrist after being hit by a pitch Friday night at Minnesota. He missed a chance to face Royals starter Brad Keller on Tuesday night.

In an April 19 game at Guaranteed Rate Field, Anderson homered off Keller and launched his bat at the White Sox's dugout.

In his next at-bat, Anderson was hit by a Keller pitch, which nearly incited a brawl. Both players were suspended for their actions, Anderson for one game and Keller for five.

Roster move:

Sidelined with shoulder inflammation earlier this season, Sox relief pitcher Ryan Burr is back on the injured list with a right-elbow capsule strain.

Burr, who turned 25 on Tuesday, is going to be re-evaluated in two weeks. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA in 16 appearances.

Jose Ruiz was recalled from Class AAA Charlotte to replace Burr.
