Another injury, another bullpen tweak for Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs' ever-evolving bullpen took another twist Wednesday when they put left-handed reliever Xavier Cedeno back in the injured list and recalled right-hander Rowan Wick from Class AAA Iowa.

Cedeno is on the IL with left-wrist inflammation, an aggravation of the injury that put him on the IL from late March until May 11.

"We had to get things straightened out, out there," manager Joe Maddon said. "Cedeno's still not 100 percent, so we made that move. He (Wick) has been pitching really well. We liked him in spring training.

"He provides length if we need it, also. So there were a lot of reasons why to do it, but part of it was that he's been pitching well enough to be here, too. A big part of it."

At Iowa, the 26-year-old Wick was 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 13 games. He walked five and struck out 25 in 19 innings with a 1.11 WHIP.

He made his major-league debut last Aug. 1 with San Diego and got into 10 games, going 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA.

"I feel like I came into some command," he said of his success at Iowa this year. "I was throwing three pitches for strikes. I got into a good flow of things and stuff just started to work for me."

What did he gain from his big-league experience last year?

"Just that I could pitch here and I belong and to be comfortable and hopefully pitch well," he said.

The Cubs obtained Wick in a trade for infielder Jason Vosler last November.

Strop throws again:

Reliever Pedro Strop threw a 25-pitch bullpen session, his second bullpen this week, as he recovers from a strained left hamstring. He has been on the IL since May 7.

Strop will throw another bullpen session later this week, and it's likely he will make a minor league rehab appearance before being activated. He had been filling in for injured closer Brandon Morrow.

Walk-off fun:

Including Tuesday night's 3-2 victory in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cubs had recorded 4 walk-off wins in the last eight home games since May 7.

Javier Baez came off the bench to hit a game-winning single Tuesday. Other Cubs with walk-off hits during this span have been Kris Bryant, Jason Heyward and Willson Contreras.
