Baseball: Grayslake Central's Moe hands Grant first NLCC loss

Coby Moe tossed his second consecutive shutout, allowing only 2 singles while fanning 12, as visiting Grayslake Central gave Grant their first Northern Lake County Conference loss with a 2-0 victory Monday.

Grant fell to 22-5 and 15-1 in the NLCC, while Grayslake Central improved to 23-5 and 14-2. Grant visits Grayslake Central on Tuesday, needing a win to clinch the NLCC title.

After 5 scoreless innings, the Rams put 2 runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning against Grant starter Carlos Martinez. With one out, Nic Presutti doubled and scored when the next hitter, Daniel Rogers, singled to left field. Rogers took second on the throw and, after a Marcus Maristela groundout, pinch runner Paul Kula scored on a wild pitch.

Grant put 2 runners on with one out in the seventh, but Moe picked up his 12th strikeout and then a popout to preserve the victory.

Grayslake North 8, Lakes 7: Jeremy Rowder capped a 3-for-3 day with a 2-run, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Knights the Northern Lake County Conference win.

Rowder also doubled, and both Grant Garrett (double, 2 RBI) and Jack Sisson (RBI) were 3-for-4 for Grayslake North (9-15, 6-10). Matt Heery went 2-for-4 and knocked in 3 runs.

Lakes got a double and 2 RBI from Ethan Clark.

Antioch 10, Richmond-Burton 2: Vince Roszkowiak was 4-for-4 with an RBI, Caden Davis was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and the Sequoits captured the nonconference game.

Tyler Skutnik was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Antioch (13-12), which also got doubles from Sean Weiser, Kylar Arias and Jack Gillespie. Logan Delgado contributed a single and 2 RBI, and Kyle Bukowy allowed 1 earned run over 5⅔ innings for the win.

Round Lake 10, Lake Forest Academy 0: Wyatt Hill pitched a 5-inning complete game, allowing just 1 hit while striking out nine and walking two in the nonconference game.

Charlie Burton was 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI for Round Lake (5-20). Angel Cuevas finished 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI, and Lennard Pureza contributed a single and 2 RBI. Zachery Lee also had a double for the Panthers.

Vernon Hills 3, Deerfield 1: Jack Peterson and Drew Grossman squared off in a pitcher's duel that found the Cougars down 1-0 going into the top of the seventh in the Central Suburban League North Division game.

Ethan Bowers led off the inning for Vernon Hills by drawing a walk. Alex Yu then singled. After a wild pitch allowed Bowers to reach third, Danny Wizceb's groundout scored him with the tying run as well as moving Yu to second.

Jack Morris then drilled a 3-1 fastball over the left fielder's head to score Yu. Kaden Zhanow then drew his third walk of the game. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base, and Quinn Geren's groundball scored Morris for the third and final run.

Caleb Thomson earned the win in relief, as he threw a scoreless sixth. Josh Liu got the save by pitching a scoreless seventh, as Vernon Hills improved to 16-11 and 8-7 in the CSL.

Warren 12, Mundelein 5: Casey Cobe tripled twice, doubled, scored twice and drove in 4 runs, as the Blue Devils won the North Suburban Conference game.

Brandon Houtz added a pair of doubles for Warren (27-3, 12-1), and Ryan DeVries was 3-for-4 with a homer, 2 runs and 3 RBI. The Blue Devils also got doubles from Bradley Vondruska, Brian Rapanan and Gabe Schmitt. Dru Jasnoch (9-1) went the distance on the mound, throwing 82 pitches.

For Mundelein (12-12), Austin Greco was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, and Mason Schultz had a single and 3 RBI.

Stevenson 7, Lake Forest 6: Down 6-3, the Patriots tied the score with 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth and won the North Suburban Conference game with a run in the sixth.

Chris Farina went 3-for-4 with an RBI for Stevenson (20-9, 9-4), which got 2 hits apiece from Jake Surane and Isaiah Hart. Ryan McElhinny had a double and 3 RBI, and Benjamin Ries also doubled.

Libertyville 11, Zion-Benton 0: Connor Lockwood pitched a 6-inning complete game, allowing just 3 hits, while striking out nine and not walking a batter.

Derek Calamari (double, 3 RBI) and Tanner Kelly (RBI) each had 2 hits for Libertyville (19-12, 7-6).

Lake Zurich 14, Waukegan 0: Noah DeLuga tossed 4 shutout innings, and the Bears won the North Suburban Conference game in five.

Michael Chialdikas was 2-for-3 and scored twice for Lake Zurich (18-9, 9-4). Sam Holtz was 2-for-4 with a double, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored, and Jack Pfeifer had a double, 2 walks, 2 runs and an RBI.
