Baseball: Kmet's 2 homers lead St. Viator over Elk Grove

Casey Kmet homered twice and drove in 4 runs Saturday to lead the St. Viator baseball team to a 9-5 nonconference win over Elk Grove, the Lions' eighth victory in nine games this season.

Also producing offensively for Viator were Conor Warner (2 hits, 2B) and Jake Pulikowski (2 doubles, RBI).

Nick Hoffmann had 3 hits and 2 RBI for Elk Grove (3-4) while Zach Schwartz added 2 hits with a double and Shane Crimmins had a triple.

Brandon McCafferty picked up the pitching win for the Lions while Bobby Balzano suffered the loss for the Grens.

Leyden 4, Oak Park-River Forest 3: Jose Solis had 3 hits with 2 doubles and Uli Hernandez 3 hits with an RBI for Leyden (5-3). Juan Yanez was the winning pitcher n relief and Spencer Messina earned the save.

Buffalo Grove 6, Glenbrook North 2: Matt Brunelli and Carter Giedhill (RBI) each had doubles for BG (5-3) in its nonconference win. Riley Rundquist added 2 hits for the Bison and Mark Antonetti was the winning pitcher.

Palatine splits: After losing Game 1 of a nonconference doubleheader to Antioch 10-0, Palatine came back to win the nightcap 7-0 behind a 5-hitter from Eric Pecson, who struck out four and walked four. Josh Stitt (2 hits), Tyler Pecson (2 hits), Jake Andersen (2 hits, RBI) and Ryan Dysangco (3B, 3 RBI) led the Pirates (5-6-1) at the plate in Game 2. Tommy Philbin had a double for Palatine in Game 1.

Maine West 7, Schaumburg 3: Anthony Salemi had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI for Maine West (3-6-1) in this nonconference game. Emmett Olson added 2 hits for the Warriors and Alex Del Real had a double. Joe Unger had a double and 2 RBI for Schaumburg (4-3). David Roscoe was the winning pitcher and Vince Parcelli picked up the save.

Prospect 3, Maine South 1: Will Pfeiffer, Brad Kubitz and Jacob Kiel drove in runs for Prospect (4-5-1) in its nonconference win. Tyler Priessing went 6⅓ innings on the mound, allowing 6 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks to earn the win for the Knights, while Ethan Burgh came on for the save.

Conant 5, Clemente 2: Ryan Schar (3 hits, 2 RBI) m Christian Seegers (2B), Ryan Taylor (2 RBI) and Xander Leary (2 hits) led Conant (3-7) to a nonconference win. Carl Zilinskas earned the win on the mound, allowing 4 hits with 6 strikeouts and no walks in five innings. Lukas Kim got the save.

Fremd 6, New Trier 1: Brent Swenson had 2 hits with a double, Tom Cermak a double and an RBI and Ryan Kiolbassa 2 hits to lead Fremd (3-6) to a nonconference win. TJ Davis earned the win in relief, going 4⅔ innings and allowing 1 hit with 7 strikeouts.

Barrington 12, Notre Dame 1: Clark Elliott had 3 hits including a home run and 2 RBI to lead the Broncos (10-2) to a nonconference win. Also contributing for Barrington were Will Koehler (3 hits), Joe Gardner (2 hits, 2 RBI), Nate Gazda (3 hits, 2B, 2 RBI) and AJ Christoffer (2B). Sammy Sabatello, one of three Barrington pitchers, earned the win.

Deerfield 9, Hersey 8: AJ Cerffalio (2 hits, 2B, RBI), Jake Irwin (3 doubles, 4 RBI), James Denten (2 hits) and Daniel Clawson (2 hits) led Hersey (6-4) in a nonconference loss.
