Girls volleyball: Barrington flourishes start to finish

Barrington's girls volleyball team has orchestrated some significant runs this season where the Fillies score seven or eight straight points.

"But then, there are times when all of a sudden we lose it," said Barrington coach Michelle Jakubowski.

Not this time.

The Fillies broke out on top in each set on Thursday night against visiting Schaumburg and never relinquished the leads en route to a 25-20, 25-14 triumph in the Mid-Suburban West match.

The victory improved Barrington (10-8) to 3-1 in the West, one match behind Fremd (4-0). Schaumburg slipped to 8-9 and 2-2.

"We didn't let up this match," said Fillies senior outside hitter Bailey Madrzyk, who has committed to Wheaton College in Norton, MA. "We just worked hard to keep it going and not let them get ahead of us once we got the lead."

The Fillies surged ahead in Set 1 on 5 straight service points from Madrzyk (4 kills). Included in the run were 2 kills from Peyton Tilly, who led Barrington with 11 in the match. Classmate Paige Ramel also had 4 kills.

"I think they beat us in every facet of the game today," said Schaumburg coach Tim Murphy. "We have kind of continued to be the same team for the last couple of weeks. The message I continue to send our team is that actions speak louder than words. We talked about doing the right things and that the small things matter, but it just hasn't happened.

"Either we have to start looking for a different lineup and some different chemistry or start to be a team that can make some adjustments and be a smarter team."

Barrington jumped ahead 6-1 in the second set, getting 5 straight service points from Arianna Armando, who also had 6 digs.

The Saxons closed to within 9-7 on a kill from Megan Luecht and later got to 10-8 on Luecht's tip kill.

But the Fillies drew away again to a 14-8 cushion behind 3 straight points from senior setter Sabrina Loutos (2 aces, 2 assists).

A kill by Madrzyk made it 19-11 and the Fillies eventually wrapped up the match when Tara Kozak (15 assists) lofted a 20-foot set to Tilly, who put it away near the back line for her 11th kill.

Olivia Rojas (5 digs, 4 points, 2 aces), Lauren Carder (4 points, 1 ace) and Ola Magiera (2 kills) were other key performers for the Fillies, who host Palatine and Fremd next week.

"I thought we did a really nice job of commanding the court the entire match," Jakubowski said. "We're starting to trust each other and play for each other. That's the positive of it. We've talked to the girls about the process of getting better and that we still control our own destiny (in the conference)."
