Chicago Fire signs Argentine defender Del Grecco

The Chicago Fire moved to solidify its defense Thursday with the signing of Argentine defender Nicolas Del Grecco.

The Fire is 6-9-5 on the season and in eighth place in the Eastern Conference of MLS, two spots from a playoff berth. It is allowing an average of nearly 2 goals a game, including Wednesday night's 4-3 loss to the Philadelphia Union, which has one of the weakest offenses in MLS.

The signing for the Fire is not expected to be the last of the summer transfer window, which just opened Tuesday. The Fire also could use a starting goalkeeper, a wide midfielder and a central attacking midfielder.

The 6-foot-1 Del Grecco, 24, arrives from Honduran side Club Deportivo Olimpia. He is under contract to the Fire through the 2019 season with club options for 2020 and 2021.

Del Grecco is expected to partner in central defense with Johan Kappelhof. Coach Veljko Paunovic has tried several players at central defense this season, including recently moving left back Brandon Vincent to the middle. Del Grecco's arrival should allow Vincent to return to left back.
