Frisk/Paddock Cup and Trophy: Barrington teams up for another sweep

There's a very familiar look this year to the varsity sports excellence awards presented to Mid-Suburban League schools by the Daily Herald, and it should come as no real surprise.

For the second straight school year and third time in the past five years, Barrington High School of District 220 has captured both the Paddock Cup for boys and Paddock Trophy for girls.

Named for long-time Daily Herald editor and sports writer Bob Frisk, who retired in 2008 after 50 years with the newspaper, the prestigious awards and traveling trophies given by Paddock Publications represent competition in 13 varsity sports for both boys and girls that cover fall, winter and spring.

Each of the 13 varsity sports plays an equal role in determining the final standings. Conference champions earn 14 points, the runner-up 12, third place 11 and then down the line. There is a formula that determines varsity sports that do not have overall standings but only division finishes.

Considering 14 points are the most any school can receive in a varsity sport, Barrington's record-smashing 12.38 in the boys competition is a remarkable achievement. The Broncos broke their own record of 11.6 set in 2014-15.

Prospect finished second in the boys' Cup race with an average of 9.81 per sport. The Knights' all-time best is 10.58 established in 2009-10 when they finished second to Fremd's 10.65 in the closest race in Cup history. Prospect was No. 1 in 2008-09 with 9.92.

Barrington's Fillies averaged 11.62 points per girls sport that topped their previous best of 11.5 set in 2016-17. Palatine has the all-time record of 12.35 established in 1982-83 during the Pirates' amazing run of six straight Paddock Trophy championships. Fremd, which finished second this year at 9.85, had one streak of seven Trophy wins in eight years.

Only first-division schools are published per a 1997 agreement with the MSL Board of Control.
