Ghim rallies but comes up short at NCAA golf
Texas Longhorns senior Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights finished his collegiate career Tuesday with a semifinal loss to Duke in match-play competition in the NCAA golf championship.
With Texas locked in a 2-2 tie with the No. 2-ranked Blue Devils, Ghim staged a furious rally to tie his match with Duke's Jake Shuman going into the 18th hole at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
"I knew Doug was going to put up a fight," Shuman said. "It was great to get off to a hot start. I knew he was going to claw back. He was going to push it to as many holes as he can. I was lucky enough to close it out on this last one."
Ghim was 4 down after six holes of play when he rallied with 3 birdies and squared the match on the 16th hole. He missed the fairway on the 18th with his drive, while Shuman reached the par-5 in 2 and finished with an eagle to win the match.
Alabama and host Oklahoma State advanced to Wednesday's championship match. Alabama beat Texas Tech 3-2 in its quarterfinal match, then defeated Duke 5-0 in the semifinals. Oklahoma State, playing on its home course, beat Texas A&M 3-1-1 in the quarterfinal before beating Auburn 3-2 in semifinal.
In the stroke-play portion of the NCAA Tournament, Ghim shot 71-69-70-72 to finish third overall at 282 (6-under), 1 stroke behind Augusta's Broc Everett, who defeated Auburn's Brandon Mancheno in a sudden-death playoff. Dylan Meyer of Illinois finished in a tie for fourth.
