Girls soccer: Palatine comes from behind, eliminates Warren

Surviving the opening game of this girls soccer regional proved to be a big challenge for both teams.

Eighth-seeded Palatine came from behind to get past No. 11 Warren 2-1 in the Class 3A Warren semifinal in Gurnee on Wednesday night.

Ann Luo scored the game-winning goal in the 52nd minute off a corner kick from Olivia Radtke.

"I tried to curve the ball more toward the goal more, so someone could finish on it," Radtke said. "I do try to work on that in practice. It was very big for our team. We needed it to finish our game."

Warren (8-11-3) had taken a 1-goal advantage in the fifth minute of play when Melissa Cote scored on a one-time kick off a pass from Emily Soriaga.

Palatine senior Sarah Clancy evened the match at 1-1 with a PK after a foul in the penalty area in the 37th minute.

The Blue Devils had the run of play and numerous chances but couldn't find the finishing touch.

"We hit the post, crossbar and cleared off the line three, four, 10 times," Warren coach Ryan McCabe said. "It just doesn't always go in. The effort was there, the game plan was there and I thought the girls played really well. It just wasn't in the cards for us tonight."

It was the other side of that same coin for the victorious Pirates.

"The better team with the most chances doesn't always win," Palatine coach Willie Filian said. "We've gone through that seven times this season. We've carried the play and had the better chances this season, we didn't win. Today was one of those days - the soccer Gods were on our side."

Palatine will meet up with the top-seeded Lake Zurich (11-2-3) in the regional final at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Warren. The Bears got past Wheeling 9-0 in the other regional semifinal Wednesday.
