Boys water polo: Fremd edges Hersey in a classic
Fremd senior Derek Warnstedt's sudden-victory goal lifted the fifth-seeded Vikings to a 12-11 win when their matchup against No. 4 seed Hersey was still tied after the two overtime periods in Schaumburg boys water polo sectional quarterfinal play Wednesday.
Fremd improved to 17-11 while Hersey, runner-up in the MSL East finishes at 20-9.
Next up in the Friday semifinals for Fremd is Mid-Suburban League champion Barrington (19-6). The Broncos led against Palatine 8-4 in the second quarter, then pulled away from eighth seeded Pirates (7-25) with an impressive third-quarter burst in a 17-5 win.
Second-seeded Conant came through with a 14-5 victory over Prospect (12-15).
The Cougars (19-10) advance to a Friday semifinal against third-seeded St. Viator, which eliminated Schaumburg 12-5 late Wednesday.
Buffalo Grove sectional: Dan Korol scored 3 goals to help the Mid-Suburban East champion Bison past Deerfield 9-3. Next up for second-seeded Buffalo Grove (25-5) is a 6 p.m. Friday semifinal against No. 3 seed Mundelein.
Glenbrook South sectional: Eighth-seeded Maine West bowed out of the postseason with a 15-1 loss to top seed Loyola.
