Big spring continues for Round Lake's Newman

Round Lake grad Ryan Newman enjoyed a big weekend when his Milwaukee School of Engineering baseball team split a doubleheader with Lakeland.

Newman, a senior, had 8 hits in the twin bill as the Raiders improved their record to 18-16 and 8-6 in the conference They defeated the Muskies 19-6 in Game 1 and fell 16-15 in Game 2.

Newman went 3-for-5 in the opener with a home run and 6 RBI. He followed that up with a 5-hit game in the night cap, hitting a pair of doubles and driving in two more runs. He scored 5 on the day.

He raised his average to .352 and extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

Men's track

Augustana senior Kevin Barbian (Libertyville) won the discus with a mark of 158-0 and was second (53-10½) in the shot put at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin men's outdoor track and field championships in Naperville, where the Vikings took second place in the team standings.

Boys volleyball

Mundelein will host Wheeling on Thursday in a nonconference match that will be dedicated to the memory of Patrick Zepeda, father of freshman Nate Zepeda, who is a member of the freshman volleyball team.

Patrick Zepeda, who passed away recently, leaves behind his wife, Noemi, and four children. This close-knit family is involved in the Mundelein community and local sport organizations. The oldest, Lucas, played football for MHS and is finishing his freshman year playing football and earning a degree at UW-Stevens Point. Nate is a freshman at MHS and plays football and volleyball. Sophia is in middle school and plays softball for the MBSA Stampede and basketball. The youngest, Reyes, plays football for Lake County Stallions.

A Zepeda family fund was created to help with expenses and the future education of his children. As of last week, it had raised over $24,000. To contribute visit the Go Fund Me page.

MHS will have a 50/50 raffle and will be taking donations Thursday night to help raise money for the family. The school is urging everyone to come out and support Nate and the Zepeda family.

The JV and varsity matches will be played in the main gym at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. The freshman match will be played in the north gym at 5 p.m.

Womens' track

Mundelein senior Kalli Majewski, a two-sport standout, announced plans to compete for Augustana College in Rock Island.

Majewski competed in sprints, hurdles and jumps for coaches Kurt Rutz and Johnathon Mahoney at Mundelein.

She captured a North Suburban Conference championship in the triple jump as a senior in 2017, going a personal-best 36-2¼. She recorded another best with a third-place: 47.58 in the 300-meter hurdles.

At the 2017 Grayslake North sectional, Majewski finished third in the triple jump and 300 hurdles and added a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal best of: 16.05.

Majewski also competed in the 200, long jump, 55-meter hurdles and 4x400 relay during her high school career.

In tennis, she was a two-time all-conference performer at No. 1 and 2 singles and played for her mother Shelley Majewski.

A National Honor Society member and All-Academic Scholar, Kalli is planning on a major in pre-medicine at Augustana.

The Vikings have won 12 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin outdoor championships in women's track since 1988.

Softball

Round Lake third baseman/outfielder Charla Ryan has signed to play at Harper College in Palatine.

Ryan is having a standout senior season with the Panthers, hitting .313 while reaching base at a .387 clip and driving in 20 runs.

"Charla has the type of attitude that you want in every player," said Harper coach Scott Plaza. "She will continue to play hard and work to be the best no matter what. Her personality is one that the rest of the team will take to and want to be around. I'm excited to have her come play a huge role for us next season."

Ryan also plays for the Bordertown Bandits in the summer and was a member of Round Lake's competitive cheerleading team.

Under the Lights Showdown

The Carmel Catholic and Mundelein softball teams will have an "Under the Lights Showdown" at Keith Mione Community Park in Mundelein on Friday. The varsity game is set for 7:30 p.m. Athletic directors Andy Bitto of Carmel and Troy Parola of Mundelein will throw out ceremonial first pitches.

Welter to Hall

Former Grant wrestling standout John Welter, a 1967 graduate, was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Association hall of fame when it held its 48th annual banquet in the Holiday Inn Grand Ballroom in Countryside last month.

Welter finished second in the state at 133 pounds in his senior year and was all-conference all four years. He was inducted into the Grant Hall of Fame in 2014.

Welter won the national junior college 150-pound championship while at the College of Lake County in 1973 and was inducted into that school's hall of fame in 1994.

After getting his associate degree, he took off four years before attending Wisconsin-Parkside where he also wrestled. He graduated from Northern Illinois in 1979.

He then took a teaching job in the Grayslake Elementary District in the fall of 1979. He taught for 32 years, retiring in 2011. He is still a substitute teacher.

Welter has specialized in starting new wrestling programs. He and Mike Patrick started the Fox Lake Wrestling Club in 1978. Welter was instrumental in starting the Fox Lake Stanton Junior High program in 1978. Stanton won the Illinois Elementary State Association state title in 1981 and 1995 under Welter.

He also started the Grayslake Middle School wrestling program in 1989. After stepping away, he came back to resurrect that program in 2014 after it had been discontinued. He quickly led the school to fourth place in the 2016 IESA state tourney and third in 2019. He has coached 37 IESA state finalists, winning 22 of them. He was named the 2009 IESA Grand Marshal.

Men's lacrosse

Augustana junior defender Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich) was named to the first team of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin all-conference team.

He tied for the team lead in caused turnovers this year with 20, equaling the fourth-highest single-season total in school history. His 35 ground balls ranked fourth on the team. His 48 career caused turnovers currently rank third all-time at Augustana.

Men's track

Barrington senior Luis Cossio IV, the 2017 IHSA 400-meter state champ, has signed a national letter of intent with Notre Dame.

"I am extremely thankful to everyone," he said. "Especially my coaching staff, for everything they have done for me over the years in order to prepare me for this next chapter of my life."

Cossio IV had also taken official visits to Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois and an unofficial visit with Wake Forest. He also communicated with Virginia and Alabama. Cossio IV hopes to join the Mendoza College of Business as a sophomore at Notre Dame.

• Augustana senior Kyle Hucker (Wauconda) was a member of the 4X400 unit that took seventh (3:14.11) at the historic Drake Relays in Des Moines IA.

That time was second-best among NCAA Division III teams at Drake and ranks third in the nation this year.
