Softball: Barrington wins with McMahon masterpiece

Catherine McMahon fired the second no-hitter of her career on Saturday as Barrington's softball team blanked host Hoffman Estates 16-0 in five innings on Saturday.

The senior right-hander (8-1), who no-hit Palatine two years ago, struck out nine and walked none in the Mid-Suburban West game. She faced the minimum 15 batters as the only player to reach base was on an outfield error that resulted in an out at second base to end the second inning.

Abbey Jacobsen belted a 3-run homer for the Fillies (19-2, 9-0) in their 10-run top of the fifth inning and it was followed by a solo blast from Tori Meyer, who was 2-for-4 with a RBI and 2 runs.

Other multiple hitters for the MSL West leaders were Samantha Murphy (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, 3 runs) and Rachel Mori (2-for-3, RBI, run). Katherine Stagnito and Caroline Hoppe also had doubles.

Fremd 8, South Elgin 6: Host Fremd raised its record to 11-6 with a nonconference win. Nikki Kehoe threw a complete game to raise her record to 4-1 while top hitters for the Vikings were Grace Stevens (2-for-3, 1 run, stolen base) and Kaylee Goluch (2-for-2 (2 walks, 2 runs).

Prospect 20, Addison Trail 6 (5 inn.): Visiting Prospect (14-5) belted 24 hits and junior pitcher Emalee Depa (6-2) threw a 7-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks in five innings.

Lauren Caldrone (triple), Madeline Borkowski (triple, double) and Kaitlyn Pancini each went 5-for-6 to lead the Knights' offense. Other multiple hitters were Alyssa Cacini (3-for-6, home run, double), Alex Kanter (2-for-6, double, 2 walks) and Jackie Orel (2-for-6, 1 walk). Colleen Palczynski also doubled for Prospect.

Rolling Meadows 15, Wauconda 3 (5 inn): Junior slugger Sara Benner broke her own single-season home run record by connecting for No. 11 while going 4-for-4 with 6 RBI. It was Benner's school-record 21st career homer.

Other multiple hitters for visiting Meadows (8-10) were Sam Allen (2-for-4, 2 doubles), Stephanie Thompson (2-for-4), Kendra Herring (2-for-4, 2 double), Caroline Slowik (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Parker Cavanaugh (2-for-3), who also belted a homer and a double.

Elise Kowalski (7-3) struck out four while tossing a 6-hitter. Highlighting her defense, which made only 1 error, was a superb running catch by outfielder Kelsie Campbell in the first inning.

Hersey 13, Glenbrook North 9: Senior Jodi Hermannn belted a 2-run homer for Hersey, which raised its record to 12-3 with the nonconference win in Northbrook.

Junior Sarah Bailitz (3 innings, 5 strikeouts, 4 hits) improved to 8-1 while sophomore Ria Patel (4 strikeouts, 3 hits) went the final three innings.

Junior Brianna Luciano (4-for-5, 3 RBI), Bailitz (2-for-5) and senior Asia Luboyeski (2-for-4) were multiple hitters for Hersey and junior Chloe Gordon had a double.

Palatine drops two: Host Grant (14-5) swept the doubleheader 10-9 and 6-2. Maddie Craver (2-for-4, double, 2 runs), Emily Parrott (2-for-4, 2 runs), Grace Huff (2-for-3, double, 3 runs) and Brittany Padden (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) led the Pirates (15-4), who also received a double from Anna Selleck.

In Game 2, Parrott went 2-for-4 with a run while Huff and Amanda Stanczuk doubled. Sarah Grossman struck out nine.

Elk Grove drops two: Host Evanston posted 14-7 and 12-11 wins over the Grenadiers (8-10). EG freshman pitcher Olivia Masnica (2-for-4) belted a solo homer in Game 1 and junior Jaimie Klicka hit a 2-run blast. Teammate A.J. Trausch went 2-for-4.

In Game 2, Trausch (4-for-5) belted a 3-run homer and a double. Other multiple hitters for EG were Katie Pendowski (3-f-or-5), and Grace Engwall (2-fo-4). Klicka added a double.

St. Viator drops two: St. Viator (2-17, 0-6) fell 21-0 and 20-4 in a pair of five-inning East Suburban Catholic Conference games in Arlington Heights.

Buffalo Grove 17, Schaumburg 16: Buffalo Grove, rallying from 8-1 and 10-3 deficits, notched its first win the Mid-Suburban League on Friday as the host Bison (3-11, 1-7), sparked by an 11-run fifth inning.

Junior Sam Hansen belted 2 homers and collected 6 RBI to lead the Bison offense, which also received doubles from senior Katelyn O'Rourke and sophomore Megan Fontanetta. Jackie Bickhaus and Hannah Young each had 2 RBI.

Freshman Kylie Mainville earned the in for BG.

Junior Tatiana Cooper (5 RBI) hit a homer for Schaumburg (0-13, 0-10) while Talia Torosian doubled. Tiffani Rudnick had 3 RBI and Janalee Lyke 2.
