Softball: Antioch's powers up with 8-homer performance

The wind was blowing out at Antioch's softball field on Thursday, and the host Sequoits took full advantage.

Antioch hit 8 home runs and beat Wauconda 20-1 in a Northern Lake County Conference game. Deighton Butenschoen had 2 homers and drove in 5 runs, as the Sequoits (12-5, 6-1) won their 12th game in their last 11.

"If you hit it up, it went out," said coach Anthony Rocco, whose Sequoits had 21 hits in the five-inning game.

Antioch also got home runs from Kaylee Schreiner, Megan Lawrence, Abby Pyburn, Kayla Burkhart, Mollie Wagner and Piper Foote. Besides Butenschoen, the other Sequoits with multiple hits were Ashlyn Sundell (3-for-3, RBI), Schreiner (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Burkhart (2-for-4) and Foote (2-for-2, double, 3 RBI). Ella Maggio had a triple, and Avery Malicki and Marissa Harris contributed doubles.

Jerianne Bonaguidi pitched 3 innings for the win.

Kelly Weller's double accounted for 1 of Wauconda's 4 hits.

Warren 10, Fremd 5: Caitlyn Britton went 4-for-5 at the plate to lead Warren to the nonconference win.

Britton had 2 home runs and a double.

Grant 6, Grayslake Central 5: Sydney Goessele had 4 hits and Calista Warmowski had 3 hits as Grant got a Northern Lake County Conference win.

Pitcher Juliana Reynolds got the win. She pitched seven innings and allowed just 1 walk while firing off 7 strikeouts.

Lakes 8, Grayslake North 5: Lakes rolled up 10 hits in the win.

Molly Dietz had 3 hits for Lakes while Kelsey Ulrich and Georgia Ohem each had 2 hits. Faith Standerski had a triple and Grace Brown had a double for Grayslake North.

Round Lake 8, North Chicago 0: Winning pitcher Emily Etherington had 7 strikeouts over three innings for Round Lake.

Stevenson 18, Lake Zurich 7: The hits piled up in this game. Stevenson had 20 hits and Lake Zurich had 10.

Hailey Peterson led Stevenson with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate. Hailey Barnes and Maggie Trotter had home runs for the Patriots.
