Girls soccer: Jacobs savors PepsiCo title

The Jacobs girls soccer team really put some oomph into winning streak Sunday at the PepsiCo Showdown and got the celebratory Pepsi spray it wanted after beating No. 16 Eisenhower 7-0 for the U.S. Marine bracket championship at Lyons Soccer Complex in LaGrange.

The fifth-seeded Golden Eagles (8-2-2), who started off 0-2-2 on the season, made it 8-straight overall by jumping out to a 2-0 lead at halftime. Hannah Mohan tallied a hat trick while Dominique Anderson, Maddie Belo and Cassie Kowalski also added goals.

"I don't have words to describe how proud I am of them," Jacobs coach Stephanie Schuck said. "It really was a team effort all around. They played so hard and smart, they were really smart."

Jacobs really put it on in the final 10 minutes, scoring 4 goals in that span, 5 in the second half alone that included an own goal off a corner. Goalie Emily Pasetes kept the sheet clean with a shutout and she had some help from a back line of Caitlin Strong, Nicole Datka and Courtney Duben.

"We knew they were playing the goal long and would try to get the ball to their fast players and beat our back line," Schuck said. "Our back line was so smart holding the line and getting them offsides twice and also positioning themselves completely correctly so that they'd have advantage and were not necessarily chasing."

The Golden Eagles haven't lost since March 22 - a 3-2 defeat against Crystal Lake Central. The atmosphere has changed at the Eagles Nest, with a positive, supportive approach that takes it one game at a time.

"I'm reminding them to be proud, be so proud of what we're doing right now but (they) cannot be satisfied," Schuck added. "This win, it was so great and a great moment in the season but our season is not over yet. If they want to continue to enjoy (this season) they have to keep working. I need them to know that. Not every game is going to come easy."
