Baseball: Glenbard South's Barnick - the other one this time - gets walk-off hit

Mason Barnick did what's expected of any twin.

He matched his brother.

Two days after Logan Barnick's walk-off hit, Mason delivered a one-out opposite-field single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Glenbard South a 3-2 victory over Wheaton Academy in Monday's Metro Suburban Conference baseball matchup in Glen Ellyn.

Mason said his line drive with runners on first and second and the score knotted 2-2 wasn't as impressive as Logan's game-winner - a blast over the center fielder's head to beat Riverside-Brookfield.

The result, though, was joyfully the same for the twin junior infielders.

"We both won the game, that's the main thing," Mason said. "I was just thinking I didn't want to get out, but it was great to get a hit there."

It was a frustrating game for Glenbard South (7-9, 5-3) for four innings against Warriors starter Peter Crowe. The Raiders opened the bottom of the first with three straight singles and couldn't score, then fell behind 2-0 in the second on a run-scoring double by Max Martin and an RBI single by Mike Cortez.

Glenbard South starting pitcher Ryan Creevy kept the score there until he was relieved by Tyler Rush in the seventh inning. Rush followed with an inning of scoreless relief.

The Raiders' offense broke through in a 2-run bottom of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by John McMahon and Mike Paprota.

"We're getting to the point where the younger guys are starting to understand what it means to compete and realize they can be a good team," said Glenbard South coach Marco Eufrasio. "They continued to battle the whole game."

Wheaton Academy (5-9, 3-4) put runners in scoring position in every inning but only pushed across a run in the second.

"We've talked about it, we get ahead and have a big inning and then we just stop," said Warriors coach Brad Byrne. "The kids are getting better. It's just a matter of getting them in sync and get in a rhythm at the plate."
