Girls soccer: St. Edward wins Rosary invite

The St. Edward girls soccer team took home the 2018 Rosary Invite championship Saturday after a 4-year absence from the tournament when it downed Joliet Catholic 2-1 in the fifth match of the day for the Green Wave (10-3-1).

Madison Knott and Rachel Martini scored goals in the 40-minute title match and Katie Ellsworth provided 1 assist to end the day 4-1 overall. It was the second time the teams met and St. Edward got its revenge after losing 1-0 to Angels to start the tourney.

The Wave bounced back and downed host Rosary 1-0 in Game 2 on Madalynn Duffy's goal and Mia Castro's assist. They also downed Harlem 5-0 as Martini scored twice while Katie Ellsworth tallied 1 goal and 2 assists. Yssa Sto. Domingo and Rachel Hicks also scored goals and Madalynn Duffy had 1 assist.

In the semifinals, the Wave edged Aurora Central Catholic 3-2 in penalty kicks after a scoreless 40 minutes.

Dundee-Crown 4, Hoffman Estates 2: Genny Rendl had 1 goal and 2 assists to get the Chargers (6-7) back into the win column in nonconference action. Kendall Kieltyka, Della Griffin and Katelyn Skibinski also scored goals while Anna Kieltyka and Rylee Quillen each had 1 assist. Goalkeeper Diana Santillan collected 4 saves.

Huntley 3, Mundelein 1: Avery Fitzgerald gave the Red Raiders (5-5-1) a 2-0 lead at the half and Yetzemany Solis added a second half insurance goal in this nonconference win. Hannah Scholer had 2 assists and Brenna Keegan provided 1 and both Ashley Lovins and Jenna Franklin each had 1 save in goal.

West Aurora 4, Oswego East 2: After a 9-day layoff, the Blackhawks (3-5-2) rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit with 3 goals in the second half to grab its second victory in its last 3 games. In addition to her assist, Riley O'Brien converted her own corner kick to lead West Aurora while Yuvia Ontiveros, Audrey Stephens and Kiara McPherson added goals. Sofia Papotusis led a great defensive effort and goalie Samara Martinez provided 4 saves in net.

Elgin 1, Elk Grove 1: The Maroons (4-7-1) battled to a nonconference tie as Brenda Acuna supplied Elgin's only goal assisted by Hayly Munoz. Goalie Joana Mercado had 4 saves.

Kaneland splits: At the Freeport Pretzel Cup, despite the fact the Knights (6-2-1) played in 2 scoreless matches that were settled via shootout, they lost in the championship to Sycamore 4-3 to finish in second place. Earlier in the day they beat host Freeport in penalty kicks 3-0.
