Baseball: Sykes' clutch single lifts Conant past Jacobs

Mason Sykes came up with a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning to help Conant pick up a 4-3 victory against host Jacobs in a nonconference baseball matchup Saturday morning.

Sykes finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, and Dave Sapyta went 2-for-4 with a double. Jack Reiger doubled, walked and scored for the Cougars (7-6-1).

Teague Conrad earned the win with 2 hitless relief innings for Luke Pontikis, who tossed 4⅓ inning and allowed 4 hits with 5 strikeouts.

Elk Grove 2, Maine South 1: The host Grens got the decisive run across on a Hawks error in the bottom of the ninth inning in nonconference action.

Ryne Singsank finished 2-for-4 with a double, and Josh Periaswamy also had 2 hits for the Grenadiers (5-4-1), who won their fourth straight.

Xander Rojahn doubled and drove in the first run for Elk Grove, and Danny Lugo put the ball in play on the decisive run, scored by Bobby Balzano.

Starter Joe Montag allowed 1 earned run for Elk Grove. Three relievers - Singsank, Periaswamy and Nick Hofmann - tossed 2 scoreless innings apiece.

Barrington 5, New Trier 2: The host Broncos got their 10th win this spring when Michael Zavoli came up with a 3-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Clark Elliott doubled and drove in the other 2 runs for Barrington (10-2-2) in the nonconference contest, and David Mitchell had a double.

The win went to reliever R.J. Nowicki; starter Jackson Medina lasted 5⅔ innings and allowed 1 earned run.

Buffalo Grove 7, Highland Park 2: Sean Jacobs doubled, finished 2-for-4 with 5 RBI to lead the way as the Bison won in nonconference play for their eighth straight victory.

Rio Komatani and Matt Brunelli had 2 hits apiece for BG (12-3), and starter Andy Greenberg got the win after allowed 2 runs over 5 innings with 6 strikeouts.

Schaumburg 12, Palatine 2 (5 inn.): The host Saxons erupted for 7 runs in the first inning and were able to end it after five for their first MSL victory this spring.

Schaumburg (3-9, 1-4) had only 5 hits but drew 8 walks. Jack Lancaster and Nick Calip drove in 2 runs apiece and Tyler Robinson took a pair of walks and scored 3 runs.

Jake Golliher allowed 7 hits and 2 runs over 4 innings to pick up the win.

Palatine (11-8, 3-3) got a 3-for-3 effort from Jack Hopper, including a double. Josh Stitt finished 2-for-3 with a double and scored twice, and T.J. Skelnik drove in 1 run.

Glenbard North 8, Rolling Meadows 1: The visiting Mustangs (4-6-2) managed just 3 hits - a double from Jack Kane and singles from Nate Pardini and Matt Lothery - in a nonconference loss.

Prospect 3, Glenbrook South 2: The host Knights scored once in the first, third and fifth innings, then were able to weather a 2-run rally by the Titans in the sixth to win in nonconference play.

Anthony Composto doubled and drove in a run for the Knights (7-6). Anthony Catalano and Ryan Howe (double) had the only other hits for Prospect.

Starter Bryce Jensen made it through the sixth inning and allowed 4 hits with strikeouts, and Mack Malczewski pitched the seventh inning to get a save.

Maine West 7, Hersey 4: Matt Johnson doubled twice and drove in 2 run to help the host Warriors claim a nonconference victory.

David Roscoe (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Cory Scholler also had 2 hits apiece for Maine West (4-7).

AJ Ceffalio, Cristian Rodriguez and Will Adamski finished with 2 hits apiece for Hersey (6-10-1).

Matty Mustari earned the win for Maine West. Roscoe threw 2 innings of scoreless relief.

Fremd 1, Glenbrook North 0: Brent Swenson scored in the second innings, and Fremd pitchers Victor Fujiu and Connor Giusti did the rest.

Fujiu allowed just 2 hits with 7 strikeouts over the first 6 innings and got the win, and Giusti fired a flawless seventh inning to get the save.

Swenson finished with 2 of the 4 hits for Fremd (6-6), and Luke Seidel had a triple.

Wheeling 10, Round Lake 0 (5 inn.): DJ Godlewski homered and doubled to help the Wildcats make quick work of the Panthers in nonconference play. Starter Joe Jordan allowed 1 hit with 4 strikeouts in 4 innings to get the win for Wheeling.

Godlewski finished 3-for-3 with 3 RBI, and teamates Drew Roberts, Cade Zalewski and Michael Best finished with 2 hits apiece.
