Softball: Hoffman edges Schaumburg 4-3

Senior catcher Jenny Camiliere's one-out groundout to first base allowed Bri Venegas to score from third base in the top of the seventh inning, and that run was the difference in Hoffman Estates' 4-3 Mid-Suburban West softball win at Schaumburg on Friday.

Winning pitcher Emily Grossi tossed a 7-hitter with 2 earned runs, 5 strikeouts and 2 walks as she and the Hawks improved to 3-4-1 and 2-1 in the West while Schaumburg stands at 0-7 and 0-3.

Leading the Hoffman offense were Venegas (2-for-3, double, RBI), Giselle Velzquez (2-for-3, home run, RBI) and Grossi, who reached base three times, including a pair of walks.

Schaumburg's offense was led by Talia Torosian (2-for-4, double) and Tatiana Cooper (2-for-3).

Prospect 15, Wheeling 1 (5 inn.): Visiting Prospect (8-2, 3-1) received a 5-hitter from Emmalee Depa with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Leading the Knights offense were Lauren Caldrone (4-for-4, 4 RBI, 2 runs, triple), Colleen Palczynski (3-for-3, 3 RBI, Katie Annen (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Alyssa Cacini (2-for-4, 3 runs, double RBI), Cassie Cunniff (2-for-5, 3 runs) and Jackie Orel (2-fo-r4, double, 1 run). Alex Kanter and Depa also had double for the Knights.

Dakota Medrano went 2-for-2 for Wheeling (0-5, 0-4), which scored on Nikki Ferraro's inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the third.

Barrington wins two: The Fillies improved to 13-0 with a 6-1 win over Class 2A power Williamsville (14-2) in five innings and a 2-1 decision over Pontiac (9-3) in seven innings at the downstate Washington tournament.

Catherine McMahon (6-0) threw a 6-hitter with 1 unearned run, 6 strikeouts and no walks against Williamsville.

Kendall Peterson (double, RBI walk) and Tori Meyer (2-for-3, home run, 2 RBI) led the offense, which scored 6 runs in the top of the second of the five-inning contest due to the one hour, 15-minute time limit.

Jenna Patino had a double in the game but her longest hit of the day, and probably the season, was the game-winner against Pontiac in the bottom of the seventh.

With runners on second and third and two outs, Patino crushed a ball to center which rolled up to the 300-foot fence. It drove home Katherine Stagnito for the winning run in the 2-1 triumph, so it was scored a single.

Peterson (2 stolen bases) and Caroline Hoppe (2 stolen bases, RBI) each went 2-for-3.

Meyer (5-0) threw a 3-hitter for the win, striking out seven with no walks.

Barrington plays Geneseo in today's final pool play game at 9 a.m. A win would put the Fillies in the noon title game.

Palatine 10, Glenbrook South 0 (5 inn): Palatine (9-1) won its first game at the Rolling Meadows tournament as sophomore Rhiann Dick (3-1) struck out five for the win.

"It was a beautiful day outside and I was just focused on every inning," Dick said. "Anna Selleck did a great job behind the plate. She helped me to get the calls and to stay focused."

The Pirates offense ws led by Maddie Craver (3-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI), 3 runs), Grace Huff (2-for-3, 5 RBI , double) and Emily Parrott (3-for-3, 3 runs).

"I was focusing on hitting line drives and bringing in the runners who were on base," Craver said. " We've been aggressive at the plate which has allowed us to score a lot of runs and win these games."

"We felt really good coming out today," Huff added. "I knew as soon as my teammates got on base it was my job to drive them in. It was a great game."

Maine West 5, Gevena 1: Sophomore Jessica Steingard threw a 5-hitter with 6 strikeouts as the Warriors (7-4) got doubles from junior Gabby Demma (2) and Steingard in the opening-round game of the Rolling Meadows tourney. Freshman Emily Divelbiss had a triple and sophomore Brianna Torres belted a homer for West.

Grant 12, Elk Grove 6: Freshman A.J Trausch (2-for-4, double) and sophomore Grace Engwall (2-for-3) each belted homers for the host Grenadiers (3-6). Other multiple hitters were Lauren Clausen (2-for-4, double) and Jaimie Klicka (2-for-4). Katia Pendowski and Morgan Leach each had doubles.
