Cougars edge Timber Rattlers for series sweep

The Kane County Cougars earned their first sweep of 2018 with a 4-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Thursday afternoon at Dozer Park.

In the top of the second inning Eudy Ramos doubled, moved to third on Joey Rose's single and scored on an RBI knock by Tim Susnara, putting the Cougars (6-5) up 1-0. In the third, Luis Basabe doubled. With two outs, Yoel Yanqui lined a single to center for the Cougars' second run. The next hitter, Luis Silverio, made it 3-0 Cougars with a double. The Cougars added insurance in the fourth inning on Ernie De La Trinidad's RBI single.

In the Wisconsin fifth inning, two of the first three batters walked. Both Gabriel Garcia and Brent Diaz came around to score the only runs of the day for the Timber Rattlers when Joantgel Segovia doubled.

The only hit that Cougars' starter Jeff Bain allowed was Segovia's double. Bain completed his outing after 4.2 innings, finishing an out shy of the win. The right-hander allowed two runs, one hit, struck out five and walked four. Keegan Long (1-0) made his 2018 Midwest League debut and notched the win. Long struck out four batters in 2.1 shutout innings. Matt Peacock twirled a scoreless eighth. After a leadoff double in the ninth for Wisconsin, Matt Brill retired three straight batters who represented the tying run. Brill (2) earned the save.

Joaquin De La Cruz (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Timer Rattlers. De La Cruz allowed all four runs in 3.2 innings. The right-hander yielded eight hits, struck out one and walked four. Braulio Ortiz pitched one-third of an inning, holding the Cougars off the board. Josh Pennington posted a 'zero' in the fifth. Michael Peterson surrendered just one hit and struck out five batters in four shutout innings.

The Cougars continue the six-game road trip with the start of a three-game series Friday night at Cedar Rapids. The Cougars will send left-hander Mack Lemieux (0-2, 10.13) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
